San Marino
San Marino is about 2 km from Rimini and is one of the most important località of the hinterland best known and loved by tourists. This city is UNESCO World Heritage Site and retains its medieval town charm.
It was founded by the hermit saint Marinus in 301 A.D. and since then it has preserved intact its values of freedom and democracy.
On the peaks of Mount Titano stand the three castles of San Marino, not to be missed!
Gradara
On the green hills on the border between Emilia Romagna and the Marche stands Gradara, with its castle famous for beautyfor the romantic charmbut also for its historical importance. In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries Gradara was one of the most important military posts of the Malatesta family from Rimini.
Saint Leo
Sal Leo is 30 km from Rimini and is an ancient medieval village in the Marecchia Valley. 600 meters high. In San Leo you can visit the castle to which is linked the story of the imprisonment of Count Cagliostro, an alchemist who was imprisoned in the castle and died there in 1956. On the top of San Leo stands also the mighty fortress designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
Verucchio
Verucchio is about 15 km from Rimini and is the town that dominates the Marecchia Valley. The hill on which Verucchio stands is at the beginning of the Marecchia Valley, along the roads leading away from Rimini.
Its history is linked to St. Francis of Assisi and here you can visit the Monastery by Saint Clare and the convent of San Francesco.
At one time, Verucchio was the strongest of the Malatesta fortified towns; its fortress still shows signs of a dominating past.
